International Roadcheck May 4-6

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has scheduled this year’s International Roadcheck for May 4-6, 2021 with an emphasis on lighting and hours of service. Often called DOT Inspection Week, commercial motor vehicles and drivers need to be prepared for inspections throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The CVSA’s goal is to keep roadways safe. Inspectors will check critical vehicle components from brakes, tires and exhaust systems to van and open-trailer bodies, fuel systems and lighting devices. In addition, inspectors will review drivers’ operating credentials, hours-of-service documentation, seat belt usage, as well as check for alcohol and drug impairment.

We know the annual DOT Inspection Week creates significant capacity and service impact as drivers lose hours because of the checkpoints. Drivers may also be placed out of service for noncompliance.

Minimizing Impact

We are advising our shipper customers to be prepared during this timeframe for disruptions to service for at least one week, May 2-8.

Here are some factors to consider to reduce disruptions:

  • Capture capacity by planning now
  • Expect higher spot volumes
  • Expedite rate approvals
  • Move sensitive freight before May 2
  • Adjust appointments and shipments ahead of the impact
  • Schedule non-critical shipments post-May 8
