Transplace Cares: Giving Tuesday & Kiss a Pig 2019

Today is Giving Tuesday, a worldwide day of giving celebrated each year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. This special day kicks off the holiday giving season, and provides an opportunity for all of us to find a cause that is important to us and get involved using our time and our resources.

Time to Get Involved

One of the best ways you can get involved during Giving Tuesday is within your own community, workplace or other local organizations. Through our Transplace Cares initiative, we strive to support strategic, meaningful relationships with local and national charities, combining corporate resources with community needs to inspire charitable contributions and employee involvement.

One of our team members, Senior Vice President of Operations Mark McEntire, is participating in a particularly special event to give back in 2019. Mark is a candidate for the American Diabetes Association’s 17th annual Kiss A Pig Gala. This gala is held in Northwest Arkansas on Saturday, March 9, 2019, and brings together community leaders in a competition to raise the most money and be the lucky person chosen to kiss a pig at the event. We have pigs to thank as the first source of life-giving insulin, so it is only appropriate to show our appreciation! Over the next few months, Mark will be raising money for this special cause, and we want to support him in every way we can.

A Very Special Cause

This cause is particularly close to Mark’s heart, as his daughter’s close friend, Ava, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just eleven years old. Twelve years old now, Ava is still a smiling, active girl; in fact, this summer, she was the MVP on her softball team, throwing a no-hitter and winning the National Championship tournament. She also starts on the 8th grade basketball team as a 7th grader, participates in her school Quiz Bowl team and gets straight-As. But her world has been rocked by this disease, and she faces the ongoing monitoring and health issues that come with it each and every day. You can find more about Ava and how type 1 diabetes has affected her and her family from a recent article.

About 1.25 million Americans have type 1 diabetes, and an estimated 40,000 people will be newly diagnosed each year in the U.S. No matter how large or small, your generous gift will help improve the lives of nearly 26 million Americans who suffer from both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, in the hope that one day we can live in a world without it.

We hope to see Mark kiss a pig at the gala in 2019! You can find more information on how to donate to the cause here.
