FTL Shipment Management
- What is Full Truckload (FTL): A truckload shipment is a shipment that requires a full 48-53-foot trailer and typically weighs between 20,000 and 45,000 pounds. This shipment moves directly from the shipper to the consignee. Therefore, FTL carriers don’t require a network of terminals.
- What types of trailers are used for FTL? Dry Van (standard enclosed trailer), Reefer (refrigerated for perishables) & Flatbed (open trailer for oversized or irregular freight). Uber Freight Shipping offers all 3 options.
- How is FTL pricing calculated? Distance ( mileage), Rate per mile, Fuel surcharge, type of trailer, accessorial fees, market conditions.
- Do I need to palletize my FTL shipment? Not always. Since the trailer is dedicated to one shipment, you have more flexibility. However, proper packaging is still essential to prevent damage.
- Can I schedule a specific pickup or delivery time for FTL? Yes, FTL shipments can usually be scheduled for a specific time, often called an appointment or delivery window.
- How long does FTL shipping take? Transit time depends on distance, but FTL is generally faster than LTL because there are no stops for other freight.
- What does live load/unload mean? Live Load/Unload means the driver stays with the truck while your freight is loaded or unloaded—typically within a set time window (e.g., 1–2 hours). If it takes longer, detention fees may apply.
- What is Drop Trailer? Drop Trailer means the carrier leaves the trailer at your facility for a set period, and picks it up once it’s loaded or unloaded. This offers more flexibility for your team and can help reduce time pressure at the dock.
- What is the Detention cost with Uber Freight? Industry standard is that the first 2 hrs are free then it becomes an hourly charge of $50 per hour (up to $250) at any unloading or loading facility (including FCFS facilities). Charges will be rounded up to the nearest 15- minute increment.
- What does Layover mean and what is the cost? Non-working time that a truckload driver spends waiting to be loaded or unloaded, typically overnight. The cost is $250/Day.
- What documentation is needed for FTL shipping? You’ll need a Bill of Lading (BOL) and sometimes additional paperwork (e.g., packing slip, invoice, customs forms for cross-border shipments).
- Can I ship a Blind FTL shipment with Uber Freight? Yes, We support Blind FTL shipments- Please reach out to your FTL dedicated Rep, or email support at shipper-support@uber.com, or call 877-289-8237.
- What is a TONU and the associated cost? Dry Run, a pick up was requested but when the driver arrives no freight is given to the driver. Starts at $150 for dry van and flatbed shipments and $200 for reefer shipments, if the load is not cancelled at least 24 hours prior to pickup.
- What is a Delivery Appointment? A Delivery Appointment is a scheduled time arranged between the carrier (delivery company) and the consignee (recipient) to ensure someone is available to receive the shipment. Setting up the appointment might cause a 1-2 day delay from the originally estimated delivery date. There might be an extra charge for this service so please contact your dedicated FTL rep and or support at shipper-support@uber.com.
- What happens if my FTL shipment is delayed? While we strive to ensure every shipment runs on time, delays can sometimes happen due to factors like weather, traffic, mechanical issues, or facility holdups. For urgen concerns, contact your dedicated FTL AM or reach out to our FTL support team at shipper-support@uber.com.
- How do I file a claim for damaged or missing FTL freight? Document damage on the POD, take photos, and submit your claim with supporting evidence.

- How does Multi-stop work? 1) A shipper books a truckload that includes multiple stops before the final delivery. 2) The carrier follows a pre-planned route, making pick-ups or drop-offs at different locations. 3)The load is optimized to reduce empty miles, improve efficiency, and lower costs compared to booking separate shipments.
